A Cheaper Cheapskate You've Never Met

My oldest brother and I used to joke that our Dad could squeeze a buffalo nickel until it squealed, and that he got more fun from agonising over a purchase than he did when actually making it. Now that I'm getting older I find that I may have inherited that tendency. A little. Maybe.

Okay, truth is that I hate just throwing something away, both because of the financial aspect and because I believe in re-using or re-purposing everything I can; even 'trash'. As you know, we use our fireplace daily and firestarters are expensive; many of them aren't very environmentally friendly either, soo... Thinking cap on. My solution isn't earth-shaking but it does give me a sense of satisfaction, making use of things which would otherwise end up cluttering a landfill. I'd thought of the dryer lint/wax/egg carton firestarters but, frankly, there are much better uses for cardboard egg cartons, like compost and seed-starting, and I'm certainly not going to toss the foam ones in the fire, same with cardboard toilet paper rolls. So I started making these from trash.

Step 1: Gather up some safely burnable trash, like this:

An empty sugar bag, empty baggie box, an old butter wrapper (which, incidentally, not only wrapped butter but was also used to grease the loaf pan for the pear, ginger, and walnut cake before being added to the firestarter pile, so THREE uses, yay!) a greasy paper towel unsuited for the compost, an old grocery list, some wax left in the bottom of a candle jar, some used wooden matchsticks and a few twigs. Told you I don't like tossing things!

Step 2:

Wrap twigs and wax in paper products.

Step 3:

Tuck them away in your cardboard box and then Step 4: Shove it in the sugar bag.

But don't forget Step 5! Start one of these, and enjoy.

Yup, I'm a cheapskate, lol.

On a sidenote: the last few days have been very hurty so I'm taking tomorrow night off but Thursday night/Friday morning I'll be back with some of The Queen of Small Thing's thoughts about love; they might surprise you. What could be more appropriate for Valentine's after all?

And now for an old favourite which never fails to make me smile:
